(9,084 posts)that was my Mom's ham and bean soup that was so thick you could stand a spoon in it. She would make a bunch of it in early November and freeze it in quart freezer containers. Then whenever the mood hit you could go to the freezer. She did beef stew, vegetable beef soup and chile that way also. Along with mashed strawberries, vegetables of all kinds etc. Middle of winter a few spoonfuls of those mashed strawberries over vanilla ice cream really hit the spot.
One of my favorite dinners would be when I walked in the house and she was making beef short ribs and gravy, boiled potatoes and we'd have a pie for dessert that she made earlier. I remember how good a little catsup was with those short ribs and mixed with the gravy and potatoes. My paternal grandmother lived just up the road and she made the best pork steak and gravy and mashed potatoes. Big black cast iron pans. Slow cooking.
