Most Ramones recordings were three-chord wonders. That particular song might have been a heavy lift for them, and Johnny in particular, with verses, choruses, bridge, and modulation thrown in. A bit more complex than most pop songs. I understand that Sonny Bono wrote the song lyrics and Jack Nitzsche the melody and chord changes. Jackie DeShannon, who had a hit with the original recording, has claimed that she participated in the songwriting as well but didn't receive a credit.
