In reply to the discussion: What cartoons and kid shows , that you watched, would not be allowed on TV today? [View all]Niagara
(12,121 posts)23. I would like to mention 3 separate cartoons with several characters.
Looney Tunes. Speedy Gonzales has a cousin named "Slowpoke" Rodriguez that packs a gun. It's somewhat implied that "Slowpoke" may be a stoner.
Scooby Doo and Norville "Shaggy" Rogers. These two were generally always off by themselves and always hungry while devouring oversized portions of food. There's a discrepancy as the creators have stated that it was not intended for both of these characters to be stoners.
The Ren and Stimpy Show. There were an abundance of adult themes that I can't even to begin to describe any of them. Still hilarious though and the show aired on Nickelodeon.

Ty, I didn.t like it. Even as a child I knew something was wrong. Didn't think it was funny.

I loved everything about Rocky & Bullwinkle. The fact that I remembered so much of it for decades

The writers were top notch. Allan Burns and some others went on to create some iconic sitcoms like Mary Tyler Moore Show

Didn't all the cartoons back in the day have some sort of cultural appropriation? nt

Speedy himself was OK but some of the more stereotypical characters around him were problematic.

My mom objected, back in the '50s. My brother thought they were funny, but I never did.

I watched them because we only had one television and that's what my brother wanted to watch. I didn;t like the slapping

All that stuff (except Clutch Cargo) is in reruns today. What specifically do you think is objectionable?

Heck, they don't show 'Johnny Quest' on anything anymore without major editing.

Dumbo with the Crows. Probably not Heckle & Jekyll. Song of the South. Jazz instrumentalists as stereotypes.

Most of the old Jay Ward stuff would just be too hip for the room today.
