JRR had an entire world and mythology in his head — Creation, gods, elves, the fight between good and evil throughout the long ages. He wrote and wrote for decades — it’s just that as a full-time professor he didn’t have time to finish everything. Hobbits don’t figure much into the Great Story Arc.

I inherited The Children of Hurin and The Silmarillion from a friend. Couldn’t get into Silmarillion, and Hurin left me cold (literally, as in my mind it was always gray and snowing). I know there’s a few more around my house, but frankly, like most people, the Hobbits draw me back. I agree with Sam Gamgee that we little people weren’t made to live on the heights for all our days.

If Peter Jackson or anyone else chooses (and I know there was meant to be a series on Netflix or something), there’s a superabundance of backstory to draw on. Christian Tolkein died in 2020 at the age of 96.
