169. My very first experience of Concrete Blonde was when I was in the Army, around 1992.

We were out in the field on a maneuver exercise. We were between two of the bigger training operations of the exercise, and had little to do but pull boring guard shifts at night. One night, I came off my guard shift, and one of my best buddies came up to me and handed me the cassette of Blonde's "Bloodletting" which had just been released not long before. He said "You've GOT to listen to this!"

Instead of hitting the rack to get some sleep, I dug out my Walkman (remember those?), and listened to the whole thing from beginning to end. In order not to disturb the guys trying to sleep, with that tinny side-tone a Walkman made, I wandered around outside. It was (you should excuse the expression) a dark and stormy night. No rain, but plenty of thunder and lightning; a perfect atmosphere for a first listen to that dark, spooky, hard-rocking album.

I'll never forget the experience.
