(21,925 posts)When I was 12 years old, I caught the spelunking bug and I became obsessed with cave exploring. A few miles outside Colorado Springs there's Williams Canyon which contained a number of limestone caves. My friends and I explored a cave named Huccacove Cave which had a very interesting layout, on two levels with some drop offs and pits that made an impression on us 12 year olds exploring it by the light of carbide lamps without adult supervision. We felt like we were in the movie Journey To The Center Of The Earth or exploring the cave in Mark Twain's novel Tom Sawyer. This was in about 1961. Since that time, explorers from the National Speleological Society made major breakthroughs in the cave, finding new passages and increasing the known cave length about five times what it was before. I'd like to go back to that cave to see what they've found and see if the cave would still be as exciting to me now as it was when I was an adolescent.
