Mornings in the Quarter were great. I walked Cleo down to the coffee shop at the bottom of Barracks and got my fuel for the morning, then took her back home and headed off to the West Bank for work. (Coming home always sucked - it could take hours some days.)

My house was on the market for $650k. They finally sold it after I was "demobilized". The owner had bought it for her parents after some writing success in the 70's, which is when it had been last remodeled. It was tres funky, with orange wall paper in the bathrooms, and state of the art 1972 kitchen appliances (except the fridge - nobody had an old fridge post Katrina). Her parents both passed away before they ever returned to New Orleans. My coworker rented it for a month, had to give it up, and I took it over, so it had only been occupied for one month post Katrina when I moved in the Spring of '08. Fully furnished, clothes in drawers, food in pantry, books in Library, booze in the bar. It was spooky. Katrina tales.

I came back to FEMA for another few months in 2011 and found a place in the Bywater. Walked by the old house once just after it sold and they were busy remodeling it. I bet it is stunning now.

I picked up a "Fixed Everything My Ass" t shirt before I left town.
