(4,851 posts)I was driving my Honda Accord LX 5 speed, I think it was a 1986. I have no idea if I was actually going 130, faster or slower, but the speedometer went up to 130 and I pinned it and held it for about 30 - 45 seconds. If you know Montana, I was on 12, which connects I-15 at Helena Airport and I-90. Back in the late 80s, it was mostly a 2 lane highway that I could drive in the middle of the day for the entire 45 mile length seeing maybe half a dozen other cars. We had a family friend who lived in Helena, and I spent a few weeks each summer out there in high school. When I was 18, I was dumb. There were a few spots where you knew the cops were watching for reckless driving, but there was no speed limit, just drive "reasonable and proper" under the road conditions. So on a clear day the cops would not pull you over for going up to 80. My Ford Taurus my uncle had back then only went up to 85 on the speedometer, so we drove the whole length with it pinned, slowing up to 80 or so for those stretches at the peaks and curves where we knew cops were. I never knew how fast I got. Once my cousin got the Honda, one time I decided to pin it at the 130 that the speedometer read. I honestly never did it again because it felt very unsafe. I felt the tires had poor contact with the road and the car was catching more updraft than I felt safe with. But I was young and stupid and did it one time. I always say that I drove 130 mph, but I have no idea if I was actually driving that fast or maybe faster/slower. Who knows how accurate that speedometer was at that speed. I would never do that again unless I was in a racecar designed to keep on the road at such speeds.
