35 years since I became toothless also, except that I had immediate dentures put in.
I had 11 of my own teeth left (after having them pulled individually or 2 or 3 at a time over the years) and finally the dentist said, "That's enough" and convinced me to have the rest pulled at once.
The immediate dentures formed a barrier to food particles. First day they were very painful on my gums and Tylenol w/codeine was my best friend.
Day after was better, and two weeks later I was eating corn on the cob.
Like you, I had horrible pain from decaying teeth. Now I don't ever have to suffer again from a toothache, although gum sores can be a bit painful but nowhere near a toothache.
I hope your gums heal quickly and you get a new smile. Something good to look forward to.
