You made us look things up

You made us question everything

Even if that made us disagree with you

You were a GOOD dad

I remember when you picked me up from juvy in Pacerville.

The look on your face was priceless.

Since I had dyed my hair blonde a la ‘The Outsiders’

I could watch you form the words “what the fuck?” with your lips

I remember when you took us kids to your work

For fun you took us in your patrol car

Brought us to whatever arrest procedure was done in the 80s

Then showed us SJPD on W Mission

I remember the cars you drove home in the late 80s

The unmarked cars that looked like rentals

Even in my teenage years I asked

“Where is that siren light they use on TV? You know, the one you’re supposed to affix to the roof…”

I also remember a man who read every night

A man who appreciated the validated and proven

He wanted evidence of whatever claim you made

This prepared me for a world that required proof

Half-assed speculations were just that

Proof comprised of evidence were what they were

Dad, you were a great father

The two of us would never have turned out like we did

If it weren’t for you

I miss you dad

And I will forever
