The "cool" kids in high school had the appearance, means, maturity and most notably; autonomy, of a person in their mid-20's.
Never saw anything like that in my HS years ( late 70's ) and neither did anybody else I mentioned this to. As "cool" or popular as they were, and how much "stuff" they had; they were still kids living under some sort of authority.
