In this young woman's case, the odds were in her favor...but typically, they are not.
This time the gun was used to protect her and her child. The next 22 times, it might be used against her or her child.
I favor a big dog, personally. I'm surprised if she had the German Shepherd at that time that the two guys with only knives were willing to risk taking on a dog like that. The article does not mention a dog, so it was either outside, or she got it afterward. Even being outside, it had to be chained or fenced away from the house, in which case it was no protection except for barking. She may have lived in a secluded rural area with no close neighbors to call on. And that may also be why it took so long for a deputy to show up.
