It depends how you're using the French press.

If you're using it to brew hot coffee...add the coffee, followed by boiling or nearly-boiling water (coffee brews best at 190-205°F but boiling water will work fine for most people.) and stir before placing the top on. Plunge the plunger after 4 minutes and serve while stil piping-hot.

If you're using it to brew cold-brewed coffee...add the coffee, followed by cold water and stir before placing the top on. Let stand for 12-20 hours on the counter-top out of direct sunlight, unless you live someplace terribly warm like AZ or GA. (in which case, put it in the fridge) Plunge the plunger and serve over ice...or heat it over the stove-top if you want it hot, before serving.

Try coconut milk...it has a coconutty flavor that isn't unpleasant in not necessarily desired, but it does have a fattier, richer taste and coconut fat is healthy.
