1. Don't buy a Bosch.

I know it always gets the highest ratings, but we hated ours. Never cleaned properly, and after a couple of years the front panel with the buttons just came off one day!

We now have a Kitchen Aid, and I really like it. Kenmore (Sears brand) is also pretty good I hear.
