In those galaxy spanning sci-fi civilizations (like Guardians or Star Wars), there has to be a system of patching/fabricating a variety of tech together. Are you really going to wait for a part to arrive from Alpha Centari? No way, you'd have to be able to quickly fabricate many different items otherwise you'd end up stuck or dead somewhere.
