(29,714 posts)In fact, our canal system was built by them!!
They lived in the area of Phoenix from about the year 0 to the 15th century, but were at their height from about 800-1300.
Of course, it was a different climate. Still a hot desert, but they got more rain, and temperatures dropped into the 60s at night.
It's our pavement that has radically changed the environment (for the worse).
An extended drought drove them from the area (except a few holdouts along the Gila River) in the 15th century.
It is very common to find sherds of pottery, or even entire villages, when one digs in the Phoenix area. Construction needs to be halted and the site fully excavated and documented before construction can continue. Of course, I suspect many finds are never reported.
My great-Uncle was the City of Phoenix Archaeologist for over 40 years.
