In reply to the discussion: you know those songs that you absolutely have to listen to at ridiculously loud volumes? [View all]Hugh_Lebowski
(33,643 posts)And I'll tell you why briefly.
Basically this album was recorded in a whole bunch of different locations (unlike III and IV for example) and it's really obvious if you listen to it critically with good equipment (which is the sorta nerdy thing I like to do lol
)
The recording on THIS song sounds like crap to me. As do the recordings on a number of other songs on it. Not that I don't like the song (it's not brilliant but it's quite decent, esp. the drumming), I just don't like how it sounds. Tons of compression, tape drop-outs, no coherent soundstage to it ... overall it's just a mushy-sounding mess, which is a shame to me.
OTOH, play this other song off of it, right after you've listened to The Ocean ... Jimmy did most of this by himself, at his home studio ... and it sounds absolutely brilliant, recording-wise. It's like world's better-sounding than how The Ocean sounds.
What I'm getting at is I really wish that everyone had just GONE TO JIMMY'S PLACE and recorded all these songs. Cause his home studio was DIALED.
And despite its lack of rocking, I'd much rather crank The Rain Song up really loud vs The Ocean. And I feel like that just shouldn't be
