10 Days -- 10 great live performances Van Morrison [View all]

1975-1985

The Band's Last Waltz tour, made into an album and movie, featured a number of legendary performers--Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Muddy Waters, and Eric Clapton.

But the act that Robbie Robinson called the high point of the show was the reclusive, diminutive, dour chap from Belfast. Like Santana who infused blues with a Latin feel, Van Morrison took early black soul and stewed it into a witch's brew of Celtic mysticism. Nobody could belt it out like Van the Man . . . and no backing band -- along with the killer horn section -- could have been better to lay down the rhythm and chordal foundations than The Band itself.
