Crossed it a few times in my younger life. Hike up, with full pack, wasn't a problem. Hiking down was really tough. We;d head into Russel Pond, I;think it was about 15 miles from the top.

Back then, people would hike up to the "chimney" with their gliders. Once oriented and set, they'd step out and the chimney would lift them another 1000 feet or so, immediately. No forward movement, just lift.
