I think many of these folks feel that we'd be better off letting the uber poor, the disabled and the elderly who can't manage to live without a social safety net just die. They don't call it that, but I know some of these folks. I know the mentality. It's a kind of ethnic cleansing through austerity. They don't really believe most of the poor will pull themselves up by their bootstraps. They think they'll kill themselves, each other, or die of addiction or a fatal disease, preferably quickly. It's their fault for having been born into poverty, you see.
