I have a wonderful friend who's a native Ashevillian. I'm disabled and she's the cousin of a neighbor who's also a native. She started cleaning for me once a week 3 years ago and we've become fast friends, which is wonderful on many levels. One of the ways in which it's wonderful is all of the people who've influenced her before me are conservatives (my neighbor and her adult son are the only rogue liberals/Democrats in the family). I've been working on my conservative friend.....among other things, she happened to be here the day of the awesome Bernie Sanders filibuster! I blasted it on all TVs -- she couldn't get away from it. She thought he made tons of sense and actually said she'd vote for him if he ran here! I explained that he's one of the more liberal legislators and he's one of the few who consistently watches out for regular folks, for the 99%. She's all about Bernie now. And she totally gets that she's part of the 99% and her Republican legislators (and our blue dog Health Shuler) represent the 1% and NOT us! (And yes, I've educated her about #Occupy, and she gets it.)

And occasionally I have to stop her and ask for a translation. She cracks me up when she says she's "fixin' to....." I'll have to get her to remind me of the couple of words I was going to use to confuse the hell out of friends....can't remember where I wrote them down. They were southern doozies!
