Just because if Labour weren't in turmoil, they'd beat the Tories without making any effort at all; so May might strike quickly while the Labour circular firing squad is still on.
Also not sure how much was choreographed - but certainly they put more planning into this than in anything to do with making sure that the UK and its citizens would survive after we followed Boris et al over a cliff!!!

Doesn't mean the governing party can't ask another party to propose a no confidence vote.
