I managed to force DAP onto the hard drive and it worked for just awhile, not long though. Eventually Windows informed me that it doesn't accept DAP anymore, so I gave up on that one.
Further research has taught me that Microsoft and AVG are partnered now, so that's probably much of the reason. However! I also found out that AVG had been forced to stop using its AVG Secure Search toolbar to load unwanted ads, and supposedly they've quit but why should I trust sneaks? So I'm keeping AVG Free except not using the firewall since I don't believe in double firewalls. AVG, even the free version, has been beefed up to the point that perhaps I won't miss DAP.
A slight aside: y'know how the complete, standalone OS disks from one manufacturer won't work with another manufacturer's machine? At least they're not supposed to. Back in the day, I actually made an HP computer swallow an Acer OS disk. It only worked a few days, but it made me loath to give up on anything very quickly.
I mention that because I'm furious with Skype (also partnered with Microsoft now) because, lacking a cell phone and not willing to pay for landline long distance monthly service that I don't need more than once every few years, I tried Skype yesterday. #1, they leave up instructions that are out of date. They also don't offer you an availability-for-your-area check right up front. Between the two, I wasted umpteen hours trying to make something work that had no possibility. So after confirming that I had a skype number, I tried calling Skype directly from my landline phone, supposedly the simplest method. Skype would give me a ring alright but would only beep twice and I could NOT choose any option 2 because it wasn't there. So finally I got on the chat line where supposedly someone could help me, only to find out that the person wasn't very fluent in English and knew absolutely squat in the second place. I told them I was going to tweet and yelp all over the internet, and that starts here today.
By that time I was desperate and tried Google Voice. Long story short, virtually the same results. I'm willing to bang my head against brick walls for a good cause, but to come up blank on two different matches left me not only exhausted but furious. If those companies had only let a new customer know right up front that there was no service in my area (remote MidWest) no matter how well their software installed and no matter how it kept dangling the carrot of success before me, I would've been disappointed but not mad enough to go to the town dump and kick rats. (Community Help for both companies pretty well confirmed that I was not doing anything wrong to cause the problems.)
