I think that websites like DU attract the zealots of the Sanders fan club. Had Sanders not run many of them would not be here since they aren't Democrats and normally vote for third party candidates.
However, they were looking for anything they could do to support Sanders' candidacy and posting on websites like DU give them the illusion of doing something tangible to support Sanders.
I don't think that they understand that their zeal prompts them to attack anyone who disagree with them (they are never wrong you know) which turns off the very people they are trying to sway. Ultimately it naturally turns into a food fight as those they attack push back, and then you get the nastiness that occurred here.

I think most Bernie supporters are sincere in their beliefs and efforts. Too broad a brush.
