It was a good place then, a safe haven in a scary era, and useful as well. Most of the time it is none of those things any more.

I think it is now well established that any Internet site that is not closely regulated gets taken over by RW trolls. I realize the idea of regulation just strikes a lot of people as wrong, but human groups seem to not be so good at self-regulating. We do pretty well as individuals and in small groups. I have no idea what the tipping point is, but big groups -- like society as a whole -- need rules to function, and those who cannot or will not abide by them need to be told to go away for the good of everybody else.

Anarchy has a very ugly downside. Right now we have some thugs roaming the corridors and sitting on juries. How anybody can say this is good for Democrats, or even democracy, is beyond me.

I have no idea what Skinner is going to do. It's still his site. But at this point, frankly, I would support a very big hammer coming down.
