... by betraying liberation theology.

No one expected him to become a guerilla, but he could have at least voiced opposition to the cruelty of the regime. There are some Latin American cardinals and bishops that were not involved with liberation theology or the Catholic left-wing, but still tried to do something. And some of them, did a lot and saved thousands of lives. Our new pope chose the easier path.
