my father worked in Chile for an American company, I got to see what was going on first hand. When I was eighteen years old I met Allende the first time he ran for President at a rally. He didn't win at that time. Frei did. Allende was such a nice man. He took the trouble to meet and greet all the people at the rally. I agreed with all he said in his speech. However, the man I met was not the one who was spoken of around dinner parties in the American company town I lived in down there. I mean you'd think he was the devil incarnate. I have to thank assassinated President Allende for making me look at American/Latin American politics with a very hard and discerning eye.
