Galleano is good. I read lots of Spanish lit. in translation, my espanol is not near good enough, and there is lots of English language history, from 1492 on. But I didn't really start to get it until I started to get into Spanish lit. and enough history so you start to understand the differences, where these countries came from, the sorry way they have been exploited for centuries in the name of "development", and so on. Then it all fits when you look at what is happening now.
