Peru: Bill to ban foreigners children from taking office proposed [View all]
Lima, Feb 12 (Prensa Latina) Peruvian Parliament is waiting for a bill to ban those who have foreign father, mother or spouse from being presidents of the country, something that would have prevented several ex-presidents from taking office.
The bill, submitted by legislator Yessica Apaza, sets down that being elected President it is required that the applicant be Peru-born individual and his parents as well and must get married to a Peru-born person.
The bill forces to modify the Constitution that set down that in order to be a president, the applicant must be Peru-born person, be over 35 years of age and have the right to vote, to which a few years ago it was included that Peruvians´ children being born abroad have the same rights as those born in the country.
Yessica Apaza argued that several former presidents accused of corruption have foreign partners and one of them is the son of foreigners.
The list of former presidents who would not have been able to take office under Apaza's conditions includes imprisoned Alberto Fujimori, with Japanese mother and father.
