Venezuela deports Frenchman jailed in Chavez plot
CARACAS: Venezuela on Saturday expelled a French national after he served four years in prison for an alleged plot to kill President Hugo Chavez, authorities said.
"French intelligence agent who served time for trying to kill the president has been expelled after confession his role," Prison System Minister Iris Varela said in a message on Twitter.
"Frederic Laurent Bouquet, arrested 18-06-2009 and sentenced to four years, confessed that he came to carry out a hit on (President Hugo) Chavez. He was detained with an arsenal in his possession," she said in another tweet.
The Frenchman, whose name is spelled Bocquet, was arrested in August 2009 in Caracas; authorities confiscated 13 rifles, two machine guns, explosives and ammunition, and military uniforms. He was sentenced for weapons possession and concealing arms.
The French embassy in Caracas did not immediately comment on the development.
