2. Nicola's founder is a bit of a crook.

The article mentioned that Nicola did not mention how much the cost/kg of their mobile delivered hydrogen would be but that it would come from clean sources only and be cheaper then the hydrogen being sold in CA. I want to see them pull that off. I'll bet you a2 buck it will be grey hydrogen (it would cleaner to use the natural gas to power the trucks then convert it to hydrogen. There is no way green hydrogen is going to be cheaper then the mix being sold in CA.

"The strategic mission of HYLA at Nikola is to secure supplies of clean hydrogen and then to distribute it to our customers at very competitive prices,” said Carey Mendes, president of the company’s energy unit. “It will, of course, support not only our vehicles … but it's also going to support every other manufacturer of hydrogen-powered vehicles who are going to need this in the future.”

The Phoenix-based company is on track to start production of fuel cell trucks for commercial customers this year, CEO and president Michael Lohscheller said via a webcast on Wednesday. Nikola has also developed mobile fueling units to support initial customers but plans to have 60 hydrogen stations up and running by 2026.

The updates come as it struggles to win back investor support since founder Trevor Milton was accused of lying about its technology in 2020 and found guilty of fraud last year."

"Nikola aspired to be the Tesla of the trucking industry — both companies took their name from Nikola Tesla, a pioneer in developing alternating-current technology. Nikola planned to build trucks that would be powered by emission-free hydrogen fuel cells. The company would build a network of hydrogen fueling stations along major highways, much as Tesla built a network of charging stations.

During the trial, prosecutors played video interviews in which Mr. Milton claimed Nikola was already producing “green” hydrogen with renewable energy for less than the cost of diesel, a major milestone. “Game is over for diesel,” Mr. Milton said on Twitter.

In fact, Nikola had produced “not one molecule” of hydrogen, Ms. Estes said. Others in the fledgling green hydrogen industry are still struggling to produce the gas cheaply enough to undercut diesel.
