I also stand firm in the belief that if people like Edie Windsor had just sat down and shut up, the moment for equality would have passed, and we'd be waiting even LONGER to see marriage equality happen, if ever.
HRC's husband certainly had a hand in formalizing discrimination against GLBT people in DOMA and DADT (both of which I understand he later regretted and repudiated). The stench of those acts shouldn't yoke to HRC, but at the same time, by HRC's own admission, she had to evolve in order to support marriage equality, meaning that she also failed to support GLBT equality at one time.
So the short of it is, I'm glad she came around, but it was NOT because either Bill or Hillary magnanimously granted equality to the GLBT community; it's because WE fought for ourselves and defended ourselves on the basic merits of doing so, and WE WON. We'll likely always have to safeguard our progress.
I don't want her as the nominee, but I do appreciate that many of my GLBT friends here and elsewhere support her, and perhaps at some point I'll be able to do so as well...?
Cheers, William.
