Bisexual NYU freshmen and Santa Monica, CA native Hillary Dworkoski has launched a protest of Chick-fil-A's presence on the Greenwich Village campus via a petition on Change.org. Quoted in a press release, Dworkoski said, "I was disturbed to find out that not only was NYU supporting an extremely anti-gay company, but it was also home to New York City's only Chick-fil-A restaurant. I knew I had to do something."
According to an investigation by Equity Matters, the company donated nearly $2 million to anti-gay groups via its charitable arm, the WinShape Foundation. This money has gone to support groups opposed to gay marriage such as Focus on the Family, Exodus International, and the Family Research Council.
Chick-fil-A was founded as the Dwarf Grill in Hapeville, Georgia in 1946, and currently boast over 1,500 locations, most located in the South. Annual sales totaled $3.5 billion in 2010. The NYU branch is a rather sad thing, located in a dorm food court and offering reheated chicken sandwiches to homesick students from the South. As we reported in 2010, the food isn't very good. The waffle fries and fried-chicken sandwiches are apparently popular among students.
