I honestly think dogs do have a sense of time and consciousness. For example my dog does not pattern walk. I have three basic variants when I first start to walk. He changes it up all the time even in some cases refusing one direction to go another. He also knows that car rides can also lead to walks in more interesting directions, and he sometimes demands we take the car.

Both my dogs associated events with tasks. For example my wife drives me to and from work. The dogs always want to go along. They feel offended if one is left behind (still asleep upstairs).
