or he could tell it was not loaded, had the safety on, or a toy. The robber could have been a sociopath who could have killed the clerk even after getting the money. Personally, I'm not going to get in a shoot out over some corporation's register. He gets the money and leaves, I call the cops. No big deal.
If he starts herding people in the back, then I would because it is likely execution if you don't resist.
