10. It is a wedge issue used as a tool to influence voters.

Abortion, gay rights, religion, gun control..... All tools used by politicians to manipulate voters. It is useful for politicians to trot out these issues so they can avoid talking about the real problems such as the structural economic disaster we have on our hands or the fact that at some point, in order to address our deficit there will be a 20 to 30% drop in GDP when government spending is cut or taxes raised.

Can you imagine someone running for office promising to increase taxes and cut spending? It is far easier to say "Obama is coming for your guns!".
