You know, I just read Go Set A Watchman - it's written by the same woman who wrote To Kill A Mockingbird - and many of the same characters appear.
She has an internal breakdown - dialogue with herself -
Where she curses Atticus (her father) for allowing her to become color blind. Because the shock of how white people could feel/think when pressed, or how a black person she grew up with might resent her - was a shock to her system.
What I would ask you to try and understand - is not everyone is you.
That said - at 42 years of age I have ZERO faith in my fellow man. We aren't all the same. There is far too much cruelty handed by one human being to another to not believe that everyone is ultimately out for themselves.
And race in America for black people - is real. It's not something flowery that can be pushed aside with language painted in warm and cozy colors. It is an EXPERIENCE. It is a way to EXPERIENCE America as your country - but to some degree your enemy.
