(31,811 posts)I spent my formative years in Germany. My dad being an elite American officer (green beret) was accepted into a little private club . . . of other elite officers. Mostly world war II vets.
Some of the nicest men in the world - they always had a super huge gummie bear for me. They changed - those men changed - because they received (their country) severe punishment for what they had done.
Come to Rochester NY - 1978- two incidents.
The woman who wouldn't take a piece of candy from the candy bowl at the Hilton on Jefferson road because I just had.
The neighbor who tried to run me over in the street.
I was five.
Now my mom's dad that was a REALLY great white man. He deliberately (in Southern California) went out of his way to hire Hispanics and blacks in the 1950's in high profile positions. Even had women architects (he was a builder). Probably would have hired an Asian Jewish Woman to be a forewoman if she had applied! You know what he believed?
Money talks bullshit walks.
Saw my dad's stripes and bars and could have cared less about the color of his skin (this is 1969 mind you).
So all that - maybe you can bring down the slogans and kick this up?
This is who I am:

In watching his Charleston Address several times - I believe he's signaling to us that we don't have to wait for a Great White Hope to save us.
I have the advantage of being able to put pressure on Cory Booker -today. Not in 2016 -but now.
Where is you advantage?
What kind of activism are you engaged in - now? Not in January 2017.
I'm engaged with the Hunterdon County Anti - Racism Coalition. It's not partisan - and it's not a 'lets have an election' focused organization. It's about helping and healing right this minute. Reaching across the aisle - and not waiting for Washington D.C.
This might be helpful to those who believe that the civil rights of black folks are under fire - but don't know where to start -
And aren't waiting on a future politician to do the right thing.
What are YOU doing in YOUR community today? Don't wait on Washington DC or a Presidential Candidate. Or a Governor. What are you doing today?
See - I've been listening to all of this nonsense since I was kid - and I'll tell you what . . . if you are talking it too much - you most likely aren't walking it. Activism begins in your own back yard - not just with 'personal treatment' of people but how you are actively engaged in your community.
