In reply to the discussion: Obama can be viciously attacked on DU, and no hide, of course. [View all]Jim Lane
(11,175 posts)Unlike you and just about everyone else in this thread, I post under my real name. So don't pull that "anonymous" smear on me, Cha (or whatever your real name is).
I voted for Obama over Clinton in the 2008 primary. I voted for him in both general elections, and went door-to-door for him in 2008. I'm no Obama hater. But I'm also entitled to exercise my independent judgment on specific issues. My judgment is that he's very, very wrong on TPP.
I'm hardly alone. A considerable number of people who overall support Obama (environmentalists, trade unions, etc.) have parted company with him on the TPP. That doesn't prove that we're right, but it does suggest that criticisms of his handling of this issue should not be dismissed as the product of "cheap pot shot shooters" (a phrase that some would consider to be vicious).
Exactly what wording constitutes "vicious" disagreement will inevitably be in the eye of the beholder. It's more productive to devote energy to setting forth the advantages and disadvantages of this particular proposed trade agreement. So far, most of the pro-TPP posts that I've seen on DU have consisted of (1) dismissing criticisms as based on mere leaks, although those later turned out to be essentially accurate, and (2) arguing that current law is pretty bad so the additional harm done by the TPP would be less than it otherwise would be. I personally am not persuaded by either contention.
