2. I dunno -- Elway was pretty scrutinized back in the day

There is, generally speaking, a much larger hype machine now than there was when Elway was a young quarterback--but Elway got a lot of hype back in the day, as well as a lot of scrutiny. It wasn't all positive hype, either, and he drew attacks just like Tebow does, but for different reasons. (His stated refusal to play for the Colts, which prompted the trade to Denver in the first place, was a big deal at the time. I remember Bradshaw was still ripping him for it in his first year as an analyst. And while the Denver media has been boosting Tebow since training camp, the media was not as kind to Elway back in the day. I remember him drawing criticism in the papers for his choice of candy to hand out to trick-or-treaters at Halloween.
