2. I can't see how it would be possible to remove social biases in such a study.

Racist researchers and workers would treat the black kids differently than the white kids, and their own reports on the children's "progress" would undoubtedly be biased in favor of white superiority.

These social "scientists" were quacks, racists, and eugenicists. Their "research" would have been bullshit.

In any case, most orphanages of the 1920's were pretty damned horrible, especially for black children.
