I also think open-mindedness, resistance to dogma, questioning assumptions (particularly one's own) as well as accepting that other people are going to choose to live their lives in ways one may, personally, not approve of- all those things lead to an understanding, tolerant, equality-based approach to others.

oh, yeah, and a SENSE OF HUMOR. Can't forget that one, it's crucial.
