12. Is it a common expression?

"Bush will throw a lot of spears in his speech to the GOP Senate retreat this week."

"Clinton threw a lot of spears in his meeting with Gingrich."

"Ford has been known to throw his share of spears when negotiating with House Democrats."

Those are all examples I just made up. Needless to say, they look ludicrous. Can you find real examples of people using this expression to describe debates and politics? How about one? Shouldn't be that hard, given how "common" it is.
