Had Bernie run as a third party candidate, he wouldn't have had the publicity needed to generate donations, which in turn would have meant he couldn't compete.

He kept saying from the start "nobody knows who I am". Who do you think would "know him" without the debates, without the backing of the Dem Party? How many Sunday political shows do you think he would have been invited to appear on as a guy who "nobody knows"?

He's been complaining since day one that the media has "blacked him out" and not given him the attention he needs. Exactly how much media attention do you think he would have gotten WITHOUT the debates, without the fact that he was running on the ticket of one of the two major parties?

He himself admitted that he ran as a Dem because it was the only way he could get any media attention at all.

I only wish the Democrats had told him to screw off when he asked to run on our ticket. But I think that's a lesson that's been learned. It will be a cold day in hell before the Party again opens its doors and its coffers to someone who has done nothing but disparage the party throughout his entire campaign.
