Republicans of the sort who liked Eisenhower just could not possibly be the Republicans of the sort who like Trump or Ted Cruz or Rick Santorum or all the rest of the macabre flock of sociopaths the GOP has been nominating for some decades now.
Hillary Clinton says her campaign is about "being stronger together," but she cavorts with people who are not hearing that message at all, and in many cases, strive mightily to ignore it. Many Democrats are not Clinton Democrats. Sanders has not captured all of those Democrats, but he's persuaded quite a few of us. Visionary public servants don't come along all the time. They appear uncommonly and voters don't always welcome them very warmly.
Institutional constructs -- major political parties included -- are too often among the unwelcoming when meaningful reform makes a rare pass near the political orbit.
