46. The last contested convention was held when most states had no primaries

The process was still mostly closed to voters and left up to party insiders. Plus, there were more than two candidates up for the nomination. Right now we have an open process where voters participate and we have only two candidates. For a contested convention you would need more than two candidates for there to even be a second ballot.
