It's entirely possible he tried talking her out of it and she flat out told him that she can't do it. Don't act like you know how this played out. Obama went to bat for her in the media, stood behind her all these weeks and I see no reason to believe he forced her to write that letter. She wrote it - she made the decision ... I respect that decision.

And it ain't just McCain, either. You already started seeing cracks in the support from liberals because she wasn't pure enough.
