It's a defense mechanism against realizing one is being screwed unmercifully, for the amusement and profits of the screwer. It's done to maintain the status quo, when all parties would be better off making a change.

It's the Stockholm syndrome writ large.

And then, there are those who are paid well to do the spinning. Most of the payoffs are in promises: potential future favors, but the canny businesspeople get hard, cold cash money up front. This is what makes campaigns so expensive.
