They trot off with 20-25% of the healthcare dollars - maybe to an offshore tax free situation.
Insurance companies are in a conflict of interest "5% of patients won't live as long with this cheaper treatment but our bottom line will be 10% better!"
America can save roughly 20% of their healthcare dollars by getting the middleman (insurance companies) out of the way without compromising their quality of healthcare.
Some might say" that's un-American! - Commie-like" I might respond that profiting off the health misfortune of Americans and ignoring those who cannot afford it, leaving them to die (as 0.1% do - 33,000 per year) is even more un-American.
Health insurance costs have reached silly levels in the US. Nearly double most countries per capita spending while way down the list on life expectancy (34?). The high cost of health insurance doesn't just limit who can get it - it also hurts employment because other countries can provide cheaper labor just on the basis of the thousands extra in health care costs. Not being competitive is arguably un-American too.
To become competitive and affordable, every aspect of controlling healthcare costs should be on the table to reduce ridiculously high costs - beyond just removing the middle man insurance companies.
To me, the only answer that can do all of the above is single payer. For the good of the country and everybody in it except insurance company executives and shareholders, it's the way to go. Let's not waste any more time with bandaids that will not result in completely healing the healthcare wound.
