(5,714 posts)These men (and they are virtually exclusively men, for the record) who threaten women with all kinds of horrific violence, rape, murder, engage in that beyond-vile behavior because they can. They feel emboldened by the broader society's silence about violence against women, and they are enabled by the power inequalities between men and women in society.
Every social movement for positive change encounters an angry, violent, extreme backlash, at one point or another. This has been the norm throughout history. So in a way, what seabeyond experienced wasn't much of a surprise-but at the same time, that doesn't justify or excuse this utterly repulsive behavior. If anything, this should be a wake-up call to everyone on or who reads DU that the struggle for women's rights and equality is far, far from over.
